Dr. K writing in Bulgaria and Breadloaf, Dr. Valdez-Pagliaro experiencing multiculturalism up close in Nigeria, seniors Carlos Benavides studying in Oxford and Briana Castro studying in China: these are a few of the summer adventures that are behind us as we start a new semester.
A number of changes mark the start of the fall semester. Dr. Rippy has returned from a very productive sabbatical completing her book on Orson Welles. She’ll discuss her research at the Works in Progress lecture in October. The department has revised the writing track in the major this year, placing greater emphasis on creative work and adding new courses in writing: Topics in Creative Writing, (focusing on poetry in the spring semester) and Style and Revision, an upper-level course designed to help students polish and perfect their writing styles. Additional curriculum changes are underway this year that will expand both graduate and undergraduate course offerings.
Seniors in the department have a number of plans as well: Allegra Gibson has taken over the editorship of the Banner and Dr. Howe has agreed to act as faculty mentor. Carlos Benavides, president of the Sigma Tau Delta honors society, has plans to revitalize our campus chapter.
The new academic year promises to be productive and exciting. I hope this blog will record all of our undertakings and keep us informed and connected.
